The shape and size of each cushion is the critical part of this instrument. In addition the method of attachment is important. Each cushion will have its own pitch and it is up to the player how to arrange the cushions on the table depending on whether the player is left or right handed. Several composers have used this effect and much is made of the stick used to strike the cushions. The best results seem to come from either a very thin long mahogany rod or a horsehair whip. Either one of these can be purchased in a range of establishments in the Soho area of central London. It is important that each cushion has been thoroughly beaten prior to use to avoid excessive dust clouds during performance.
