One of the newest Latin American Instruments, it is sometimes known as a friction drum. The drum is like a small tom tom with a single head but generally has a metal shell and lugs at one end. The head has a thin wooden rod attached to the head and the player simply rubs their fingers (sometimes smeared with rosin) up and down the rod to produce a raspy sound that is heavily used in Brazilian music.
