Marc Blitzstein was born in the city of Philadelphia in 1905 and began composing short works at an early age. He commenced his studies in composition from 1924 at the Curtis Institute and subsequently with Arnold Schoenberg for a short period of time. He associated with notable composers of the period such as Henry Cowell and Aaron Copland through his participation with the Composers Collective of New York and in 1939 started a close bond with Leonard Bernstein. Blitzstein and Bernstein became close friends and it was through this association along with Copland and Cowell that became instrumental to his early development. Blitzstein’s first significant work was his 1928 opera Triple Sec with his greatest successes being Cradle: Regina, an opera for Broadway in 1949 and his own revision of Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera in 1954.
