(1918 - 1990)
Leonard Bernstein was born in 1918 and was one of the most widely performed composers of the 20th-century. His works successfully bridged the divide between classical and popular idioms. Bernstein's music combined jazz-inspired energy, theatrical panache and active stylistic eclecticism. His acclaimed stage works include West Side Story, On the Town and Candide and he collaborated with Jerome Robbins on works such as Fancy Free, Facsimile and The Dybbuk. Leonard Bernstein was one of the most admired conductors of the post-war era and was particularly associated with the New York, Israel and Vienna Philharmonics, Boston and London Symphony Orchestras and the Tanglewood Festival. He also played an important role as an educator, including pioneering work on television.
