Antonio Bibalo

(1922 - 2008)
Born in 1922 in Trieste, Italy Antonio Bibalo studied with Elisabeth Lutyens after graduating from the Trieste Conservatoire in 1946. During World War II Bibalo was conscripted into Mussolini’s army where he duly escaped but was recaptured by the Germans and sent to forced labour as a prisoner of war. He moved to London in 1953 and in 1955 won a prize for his 1954 work Fantasia in the Wieniawski Competition in Warsaw. In 1956 Bibalo visited Larvik in Norway on holiday and later that year decided to settle in the Scandinavian Country. Later in 1968, he became a Norwegian Citizen by which time he had become a prolific composer, notable works of which include Ghosts in 1981, Macbeth in 1990 and his first opera, Smile at the Foot of the Ladder first performed in Hamburg Germany. Other notable works include his frequently performed work Miss Julie in 1975 and The Glass Menagerie in 1996 which was voted work of the year by the Norwegian Composers Association.
